UNSPACE PROJECTS: RISA
Problem:
After a train derailment, civilian evacuations and hazard mitigations are delayed because first responders lack timely situational awareness data.
Solution:
An unmanned aerial system with supervised autonomy, delivering timely situational awareness data that assists emergency operation centers and first responders with an actionable hazard mitigation response plan.
About:
UNSPACE has initialized the Rail Incident Situational Awareness project, a multi-partner venture including tier 1 railroad SME’s, Horizon Aerobotics and pending for funding from the FRA IDEA program.
This disaster response project aims to create an disaster response UAS that would perform the following functions in the first hour after a rail incident:
Minimize first responder exposure to hazardous materials by utilizing a UAS created situational awareness hazard survey
Recommend a residential door to door evacuation alert plan that is optimized using hazard dynamics (hazardous material locations, toxicity threat, plume drift, etc) from survey data
Optimize residential evacuation routes informed by survey data
Reduce citizen and responder exposure to toxic conditions by using hazard map to improve placement of safety barricades
Expedite hazard neutralization measures by rapidly reporting coordinates of hazardous material tankers to EOCs
Recommend optimal location and placement of chemical absorbent materials that prevent toxic spills from entering waterways
